DEALING WITH EXTREME COLD WEATHER

Winter is already here and as beautiful as it can be to see the snow fall, people making their snowmen, it's also true that for some of us it can be a real challenge, specially if we talk about living in countries like Russia.

Are you one of those people who are not used to living in cold countries but have unexpectedly found yourself living in one now?
Perhaps you suffer from seasonal affective disorder and have only just found out? You are not alone!

The good news is that there is no reason to worry as long as you take care of your glorious self. Two months ago I decided to move to Moscow in order to start a new life. I must mention that I was born in a hot island and even though I've lived in a few European countries in the past, I wasn't aware of the extremely cold weather in Russia.

During the first week, I started showing symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD): fatigue, low energy, sleepiness and trouble concentrating. This was very unusual for me so I didn't hesitate to see a doctor. I was diagnosed with the winter blues disorder.

I followed my doctor's advice, plus the input of a good friend, and with a little bit of effort, I got back into shape. These are my tips on dealing with seasonal affective disorder:

1- Have hot breakfasts: there's more than one option but I personally recommend porridge. Why? According to Harvard University, porridge could be a key to a long and healthy life as it could prevent heart disease. What is more exciting about it is the fact that you can have it all winter long, without getting bored of it as it can be combined with a great deal of flavours - fruits, nuts, honey and so on. On top of it all - it's cheap!

2- Gorging on sugar is one of the symptoms of SAD. Sugar gives short-lived energy. It's what I call "fake energy". Too much sugar can actually exacerbate depression. Therefore I recommend substituting sugars with beans, vegetables and fish. Why Fish? Scientists have found that Icelanders don't suffer from SAD and are great fish consumers. Have you heard of Omega 3 and the part it plays in brain wellness?

3- Wear as many layers as your body needs, preferably windproof. It's uncomfortable if you're not used to it but it's worth it. You will make your heart and skin a big favour!

4- Take as much fresh air as possible! I love walking in the park, the air is cleaner and you can take a break from the stale heating-infused air in your house. It also betters your mood.

5- Have "me time": go to the shop, buy some cream or candles, visit the cool cafe you love to death, do something that uplifts you.

6- Keep your body and face hydrated. A dose of cream everyday could make you look healthier.

7- Last but not least: do some yoga before going to bed, light some candles, put on some soft music, read a good book and/or have a relaxing tea to end your day like royalty.

Have you already tried any of these suggestions? Did it work for you? I would love to hear how you cope with extreme cold weather or SAD. Your comment is important to me.

Thank you so much for sharing and being present, it means a lot!

Tons of love,
